11u All-Stars Complete Epic Comeback to win Section 5 Championship

There’s no denying the 11u All-Star team is one of the grittiest, mentally tough teams in the Little League tournament. The 11s continued their undefeated streak and came from behind again to defeat a very tough Capitola/Soquel team.

Capitola/Soquel came out strong against LG starter Timmy McNeil, scoring two runs on three hits and a walk after the first four batters. But McNeil battled with two runners on base with a fly out and two Ks to end the inning. Capitola/Soquel added their third and final run in the top of the 3rd after two hits and a walk which set up a run on a passed ball. Capitola/Soquel tried to get one more run on the same passed ball but was unable to get past the tag of McNeil at home.

The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the 4th. LG’s first two batters were quickly retired but Kyle Matar was able to reach safely on an error and scored on another Capitola/Soquel error as the ball bounced of the first baseman’s glove and then off of Aarav into right field.

In what could be the biggest defensive play of the game, LG was able to throw out a runner at home plate after a single to left field. Grant Browder hit his cut-off man Ryan Carlisle who quickly relayed to catcher Drew Oppenheimer who applied the tag to nab the runner for the 3rd out to end the top of the 5th.

Trailing by 2 in the bottom of the 5th, Los Gatos was down to their last 5 outs after Capitola/Soquel struck out the first batter of the inning. That’s where LG dug deep and the top of the lineup got to work. Carlisle singled to left field and remained at first as Mentz-Bonnefield flew out to deep left field. With two-outs Skyler Levine singled to center setting the table for McNeil. McNeil fell behind 0-2 before sending a fly ball into deep right field for an inside-the-park home run scoring Carlisle and Levine, giving LG their first lead of the game 4-3. The rally didn’t stop there as TJ Lombardi doubled to deep right, Kyle Matar walked, and Colton Kalin was hit by a pitch. Grand Browder stepped to the plate and singled scoring Lombardi.

Mehta-Bonnefield retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, sealing the 5-3 victor to give Los Gatos the Section 5 title.

LG advances to the NorCal State Championship where they will play Reedley Little League on July 24th at 7:30pm.
