Home of Los Gatos Little League!

Welcome to the Umpires page for Los Gatos Little League

Los Gatos Little League depends on adult volunteer and youth umpires to officiate baseball games.  For active players, umpiring can be a great way to enhance your understanding of the rules of baseball and how they are applied in game situations.  It is also a fun way to stay involved in baseball if you’re no longer playing.  The League’s umpires come from three categories:

1.     District Umpires:  Volunteer umpires that have been officially certified and/or trained by Little League International.

2.     Adult Umpires:  Persons over 21 who have successfully completed an umpire training clinic such as the Western Region Outreach Umpire Clinic (see below for more information) or equivalent.  Adult umpires perform without reimbursement.

3.     Youth Umpires:  Full or part time students, 20 years old or younger who have completed the umpire training conducted by Los Gatos Little League or equivalent.  Youth umpires do get compensated for their time or receive community service hours/credits.  Youth umpires may umpire AA, AAA, and Major league baseball games, with the following age restrictions*:

•    AA: 11 years old, as of January 1st 2019

•    AAA: 13 years old, as of January 1st 2019

•    Majors: 15 years old, as of January 1st 2019

*General rule guidelines. Ages can vary depending on experience and evaluations.

Calling All Youth Umpires!

The 2019 Los Gatos Little League season is just around the corner and the League needs youth umpires for our AA, AAA and Major league baseball games.  In order for the youth program to be successful, we need responsible youths who are interested in giving back to the community (while earning some extra cash!).

You can find out more about the program by clicking here: Youth Umpire Program.  Training…there are several opportunities to learn more about being an umpire, the rules of baseball and the mechanics of umpiring.  Dates, times and locations for the clinics can be found below. If you are interested in becoming a youth umpire and have not done so in the past, please complete a Youth Umpire Application.  If you are a returning youth umpire and your contact information has changed please complete a new application as well.

Los Gatos Little League is very proud of its youth umpire program.  We believe it is an outstanding way to develop the character, courage, and leadership of our youth.  If you have any questions please contact the Los Gatos Little League Umpire-In-Chief, Rob Ludeman at .

Adult Umpires

All it takes is the desire to help our children learn the game of baseball and the personal commitment to help umpire a few games a season.  We always need eager adult umpires, especially for Major league games, where game management is of the utmost importance due to the higher level of competition.  Our adult umpires love the thrill of having “the best seat in the house” to watch some great baseball, and they enjoy the challenge of making the right call…quickly, confidently and decisively.

If interested in becoming an adult umpire and have not done so in the past, please complete an Adult Umpire Application.  If you are a returning adult umpire and your contact information has changed please complete a new application as well. You must also complete a Little League International approved Volunteer Application and pass a background check or complete the approved Returning Volunteer Application.

It is a little-known fact that virtually all adult umpires used for Little League baseball in Los Gatos (and across the country) are volunteers.  Los Gatos Little League and District 12 staff umpires will provide each volunteer with thorough training and direction well in advance of your first game.  Additionally, mentors are available to provide ongoing training and feedback throughout the season to ensure each umpire is as successful on the field as possible.  Umpires are great role models for the children, so please sign up today and help make a difference to the youth of your community!

There will be several umpire clinics in February and March to help you get ready for the 2019 season.

Youth Umpire Clinic - TBD, but usually in February.

Led by our own District 12 umpire (and plate umpire for the 2012 Little League World Series Championship Game) Dan Campagnolo, this clinic discusses the rules of Little League and is open to all returning and new youth umpires. The rules clinic will be separated into two sessions - Beginning Umpire (AA) and Returning Umpire (AAA/Majors). Both sessions will be held at Blossom Hill School - Multipurpose Room:

Beginning Umpire (AA) Rules Clinic will be held from 5:30pm – 6:45pm.

Returning Umpire (AAA/Majors) Rules Clinic will be held from 7:00pm - 8:15pm.

Western Region Outreach Umpire Clinic. TBD usually in February

The most thorough and complete clinic to learn umpiring skills for new and experienced older youth and adult umpires as well as managers and coaches. We highly encourage those that umpire at the Majors level to attend.  The clinic is taught by Little League World Series Umpires and Western Region Instructors and is free to attend.  More information can be found here.

  Youth Umpire Mechanics Clinic. TBD

Led by Dan Campagnolo and other District 12 umpires, this clinic covers basic umpire mechanics and is mandatory to attend to become a youth umpire in Los Gatos. The clinic will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Baggerly Field at Blossom Hill Park.  Lunch/snack will be provided.

We ask and strongly encourage youth umpires (returning and especially new) to attend the February and March Los Gatos clinics.
